The Terrestrial Invasive Species Participatory Science (TIPS) program invites volunteers in Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona counties of Minnesota to help survey for spotted lanternfly and key host plants: round leaf bittersweet, common hops, riverbank grape, black walnut and butternut.

Spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect which primarily uses tree-of-heaven and grapes as host plants. Tree-of-heaven is not widely present in Minnesota, and it is possible that spotted lanternfly would not thrive in Minnesota without this important host.

Jumping worms are a relatively new arrival in Minnesota, joining a host of other invasive earthworms in our state. Unlike most of our other earthworms, however,  jumping worms are causing great heartache for gardeners and significantly changing home gardening practices for those unlucky enough to have discovered these lively and voracious pests.

Nonnative is not the same as invasive. Trees have purpose in both the natural rural setting and the urban landscape. We’ll discuss the qualities (or lack thereof…) of invasive trees. Also, I’ll name some of the worst species in Arkansas and how they might be addressed in the future.

Presenter: Chandler Barton, Division Forester

Arkansas Department of Agriculture, Forestry Division

I’m a regular contributor to WOWnet, a professional forester, a mom of two boys, but not a woodland owner. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic my family adopted a local, neglected woodlot and got to pretend it was ours by working hard, creating a socially distanced community and making the world--we hope--a little better.
